Fun on the River

2009 Mississippi River Challenge

Watergate Yacht Club member, Dawn Brodey, is participating in the 2009 Mississippi River Challenge.

The Mississippi River Challenge is a two-day kayak and canoe event on the amazing Twin Cities stretch of the Mississippi River.  This unique paddle was begun in 2004 to foster appreciation of the Mississippi River in the Twin Cities region and raise funds to protect it.

On July 25th and 26th, Dawn and other kayakers and canoers will embark on a journey from Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park in the north metro to Grey Cloud Island, south of the cities.

At the end of day one, the paddlers will camp at the Historic Fort Snelling overnight camp atop the river bluffs.  If you would like the chance to give your favorite paddler(s) some encouragement at the mid-point of the event, you are welcome to join them on Saturday, July 25th for the festivities at Fort Snelling.

There will be a hearty meal provided by local sponsors (vegetarian & vegan options available), live music, cold beverages, historic actors and more.

The Mississippi River Challenge IS a challenge – one that has been paddled by participants ranging in age from 7 to 72, of all skill and experience levels.  Each day is a 22 mile stretch, paddling downstream, and there are two rest stops and a lunch stop both Saturday and Sunday.
